The Galapagos archipelago are a group of 13 major islands and over 60 rocks and islets located 600 miles west of the coast of Ecuador. The eastern islands are known to be the oldest at 3 to 5 million years and the western as well as the northern islands are younger, the youngest being Fernandina Island with an aproximate age of 500,000 years and also having what is at the moment one of the most active volcanoes. The waters surrounding the Galapagos islands have been declared a marine reserve covering an area of 40 miles around the archipelago.
